Cath Marple OwenI was born in 1966 in Sheffield, Yorkshire (Danish mum & English dad). I studied printmaking at Sheffield city Polytechnic and emmigrated to Denmark in 1988 to study graphics and then ceramic design in Copenhagen at Danmarks Design Skole.

In 2005 I returned to the U.K. and settled down in North Wales with my husband and 3 children. Inspired by the stunningly beautiful surroundings I have returned to printmaking. The images are sourced from sketches, photos and my imagination and up till now have reflected, in production the pace of life with small children and in subject matter the sort of places explored with them.

I work primarily with lino and  developed a technique which allows me to retain the structure of the image engraved in the lino, whilst building up layers of colour and creating an impressionist, textured effect, in contrast to the classic lino print with its harsh static lines. Each piece is unique as I re-work it with ink rollers, masking off some areas, mono printing and scratching back. I enjoy the spontaneity of working in this way and the physical  processes involved in printmaking.

My ceramic training has given me a love and appreciation of texture, 3-dimensional form and the subtleties of colour in glazes and my lino prints resonate these qualities.
